Ladies: If your spouse ever had an affair with your best friend, would you dump him and marry her husband?
Don’t think it sounds too crazy; Shania Twain sure doesn’t!
News this week is that the country superstar is engaged to Frdric Thibaud, a longtime friend and Swiss executive who’s wife cheated on him with Twain’s then husband and music producer, Robert “Mutt” Lange. (Lange has denied an affair.)
Sound confusing and bewildering in all sorts of ways? I think so, too.
But Twain insists she’s very much in love, even though the circumstances of what brought them together may be a little unorthodox.
“Having gone through the suffering of his family splitting apart at the same time and under the same extreme circumstances, he understands me better than anyone,” she said in an interview in People back in August of 2009.
Twain recently said she is “looking forward to what the new year has in store” being “optimistic about the future …[with a] renewed faith in love and commitment.”
Wow. I’ve had a few close friends of mine deal with divorce within the past few years, and it was heartbreaking to watch them suffer through the end of a marriage. But happily, like Shania Twain, they’ve been able to heal and recover and move on over time. I just can’t imagine finding my soul mate in the man who’s wife was cheating on him with my husband … I’m shaking my head in disbelief just thinking about it!
But having said that, I’m very happy for Shania Twain, who has always been a music idol of mine. It was largely because of her that I decided I wanted to sing country music. And I always liked the fact that she was born in Canada, just like me. So hats off and happy holidays to a strange, but seemingly happy new couple!
