How does one decide to leave the biggest boy band in the world?
One Direction’s Zayn Malik the “naughty boy” announced via Facebook on March 24 that he would be leaving the band to be a “normal 22-year-old.”
“My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined,” he said. “But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologize to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.”
Ironically, Malik has been spotted working in a recording studio, and even released a tweet that said, “Let the music do the talking.”
This comes at a weird time-the band is releasing its fifth album later this year, and the five were on a world-wide tour when Malik decided to leave.
I’m just curious-I understand that fame and constant pressure to be bigger, better, and sell more can take its toll. I understand being hounded by media and not being able to do anything or go anywhere without being swarmed can rob a person of their privacy.
But. At this point, he’s sort of already in that boat. Even if he leaves the music industry now, which, according to his own tweets, he’s not doing anytime soon, he will still be Zayn Malik. Forever. His fame might die down eventually, but for a while, he’s going to have to ride that wave. Why not wait until the end of tour? He is disappointing a lot of fans, and saying goodbye to a lot of big bucks, too.
Whatever your feelings on One Direction are, here’s a hilarious video to help you remember better days.
